In SAP, I started engagement with a more standard User Centered Design approach and practice it with cross continent teams. In addition, pattern based design was heavily used across all products to ensure the UX consistency and quality.
Around 500 among over 3,000 screens in the product needed more or less personalization. Existing patterns sacrificed the experience.
New patterns such as drag and drop, permanent sidebar were introduced. Fast iterations of informal usability test granted design decisions.

The first cloud based service built entirely in Microsoft China. The only designer within the team. Existing UX guidelines were diversified and sometimes mutually contradictory.
Set the rules and process first. Built common control guidelines before building the product.
